James Carr

James Carr passed away on the morning of July 8, 2016, in his home at the side of his wife, Barbara. Surviving family include James Carr, Jr.,, Jennifer (Jeffery) Puente, Richard (Guin Ashley) Orberg, Susan (Josh) Guest and 8 grandchildren.

James served as a security analyst in the Army for 10 years during the Vietnam War era. He received the Bronze Star twice for his work in identifying enemy combatants by detecting patterns in the frequency of intercepted radio communication.

His career included periods at IBM, Globalstar, and the NSA where he was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal. James spent 17 years working at Lockheed Martin as a Systems Security Engineer before retiring in 2014. He spent his evenings as a part-time professor at UC Santa Cruz and De Anza College which he continued until the end of his life. He was named a Distinguished Fellow of the Information Systems Security Association International, a distinction given to only 1% of members.

He enjoyed teaching, playing with his Dachshunds and Italian Greyhounds, traveling to France and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed reading fiction, history and cryptography—it was not uncommon for him to read two entire books in a single night.
